First wash your hands thoroughly, then wash the cut with soap and water.
Apply pressure to the wound in order to stop the bleeding (direct pressure with one finger is most effective).
Finally, apply ointment to the clean, dry wound and administer a sterile bandage.
If a wound is deeper than a quarter of an inch, made by a rusty object, has visible bone or muscle/fat, or you have aesthetic concerns about the healing of the wound, then stitches are probably necessary.
